Putnam Supermarket, formerly known as Weiss’ Supermarket, has been in business for more than 75 years. In December, 1984 after 50 years of ownership by the Weiss brothers, the business was acquired by present owner Jay Sinha, who continues the tradition of operating a high quality, personal service hometown supermarket.

What’s “super” about us is our long standing reputation in the community for truly personal customer service, quality selection, convenience, low prices, and a commitment to community. In addition to being an active member of the business community, Jay Sinha serves on the boards of many local agencies including: Putnam Rotary Foundation, Putnam Bank, the Northeast District Department of Health and the Northeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.

When you’ve been in business as long as we’ve been, you’re bound to see changes – and we’ve seen plenty.

Today’s consumers seek more variety than ever before. With variety comes volume and with volume comes vast sizes…and that’s where some consumers can start to feel lost. We keep your daily or weekly grocery shopping experience manageable:

  • We cater to many customers on tight budgets, fixed incomes, and those who simply prefer a less-hype, more hometown grocery shopping experience.
  • We have enough brands that give you many options without being overwhelming.
  • You don’t need to be a marathoner to manage our aisles or cross our parking lot!
  • We won’t tempt you to stray from your budget with slick displays and pushy promotions – we will help you find everything on your list without the pressure of spending more.
  • We keep in mind that not all customers have big families to feed so we offer portions and product sizes that are “just right” for singles or couples on a budget.

Putnam Supermarket has never lost sight of what we are – a respected hometown supermarket whose owner and employees care about our customers and community.

We care about keeping prices low
Not just in hard times – but all the time. Putnam Supermarket is consistently acknowledged by customers as being the least expensive grocery store in town.

We care about our customers
Northeastern Connecticut is made up of hard working folks with a great sense of community pride. Putnam Supermarket employees take pride in their work and deliver first-rate customer service each and every day. We’ve been your neighbor for over 65 years!

We care about quality
Putnam Supermarket is owner-operated. Jay is always on site or never more than a phone call away to address your needs.

We care about convenience
Providing access to our nation’s food supply - nutritious fruit and produce, select meats, dairy items, and grocery staples - is a job we take seriously! We’re in the heart of Putnam’s north end – easily accessible by foot, bike, transit bus, or car. And we’re open 7 days a week!

We care about community
We consider it a privilege to own and operate a business in northeastern Connecticut. To thank customers for their patronage, we find many ways to give back to our community.
